Chippewa High School Bands/Activities
Marching Band
The Marching Band is in existence from mid to late July through November of each year. This ensemble performs at Chippewa High School Varsity Football Games (including playoff games), OMEA Competitive Events, community parades, events and activities, band shows, school pep rallies, and school field trips.
Concert Band
The Concert Band is a course offered by Chippewa High School. Concert Band starts shortly after the start of the year during the school day and performs at several programs throughout the year including OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Events, Solo and Ensemble Competition as well as Honors Bands. Auditions are based on a year-to-year basis depending primarily upon the instrumentation of the ensemble. All students are welcome and encouraged to participate in this ensemble.
Pep Band
The Pep Band is an ensemble that is based primarily on student involvement from year to year. Pep Band begins at the conclusion of Marching Band and Football Season. Rehearsals occur exactly an hour prior to Basketball games and are typically more laid back. Pep Band performs at Varsity Boys and possibly some Girls Basketball games. Participation in seventh period Concert Band class is required.
OMEA Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Event
The OMEA Solo & Ensemble event is an opportunity for individual students and ensembles to perform solos and various other small group compositions for Ohio Music Education Association approved adjudicators to offer constructive evaluation through written comments. In addition to comments, adjudicators assign a rating to quantify the students’ performance. Students who are interested in performing at this event must be working with a private lesson teacher, or seek additional help from Ms. Riendeau for ensembles to participate in this event.
Colorguard
Colorguard teams are students who perform various styles of dance routines while spinning flags. Currently Colorguard is a voluntary group based primarily on student involvement from year to year. Depending on numbers of interested students, Colorguard tryouts occur at the end of the school year and are selected based on the results of the tryouts. Colorguard students are responsible for following all of the rules and regulations set to all band members. Failure to do so is cause for dismissal from the group.
*Colorguard Captain is determined from year to year. It is determined at the discretion of the Colorguard Advisor and Band Director after tryouts in May.
Attendance Policy
Please read the following information carefully. Attendance, by each musician, at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory, and extremely crucial to the success of the entire group. The attendance system is maintained in fairness to all those who are regular and punctual in attendance. Any absence not only affects the quality of the band as a whole, but also could jeopardize the student’s regular membership status. In the case that it is impossible to make a scheduled event, a BAND ABSENCE FORMsigned by a parent/guardian is required and must include a detailed explanation of the reason for the absence.
Filing Absence Forms
Absence Forms are available at the front of the band room or in Ms. Riendeau’s office upon request. Only the director will accept the “Official” Absence Forms. Please complete the absence forms as soon as possible to the missed date. The absence request will be reviewed and classified as either EXCUSED or UNEXCUSED by the director. The director must have an absence form on file for ALL absences, excused or unexcused.
1.) Absence Forms must be filled out for all missed performances, rehearsals, and tardies.
2.) All forms must be signed by a parent/guardian and submitted in advance if possible.
3.) If an emergency does arise, an absence form is required upon the return of the student as well as notifying the director ASAP: (330) 658-2011 ex. 515.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
Unexcused absences are unacceptable and are a detriment to the entire group. (Any unexcused absence is cause for loss of participation in performances and/or the band banquet.)
EXCUSED ABSENCES
On occasion, a band member may become ill on the day of a performance or rehearsal or an emergency may develop. If this is the case, it is the student’s and/or the parent’s responsibility to notify the band director by phone/email as soon as possible. In any case, notice must be given to the band director PRIOR to the rehearsal or performance. Please arrange vacations around rehearsals/performances. Each member of the Chippewa Band is essential and students need every rehearsal to be prepared for each performance. Missing scheduled rehearsals and performances not only hurts the entire band, but also can impede the proper preparation needed for each individual student.
*Make-up assignments will be a requirement to sustain a passing grade should an absence occur and will be determined between Ms. Riendeau and the student.
TARDINESS
You are to be on time for all functions. (Being ‘on time’ means that you have all of the correct materials and are in the correct place ready for the rehearsal to begin.) If for any reason you will be late or have to leave a rehearsal early, an Absence Form must be filled out. If a sports conflict requires continual absences or tardiness, please communicate this with the band director and indicate this on the form: only one form is required to be completed if this is the case.
(More than 3 unexcused tardies of 5 minutes or more is cause for any of the following; loss of 3rd quarter privileges, lowering of grade, dismissal from performance, etc.)
JOBS
Schedules for each band are given well in advance. ALL rehearsals and performances are MANDATORY. Therefore, all jobs must be scheduled around this schedule. Please be sure that you give your employer a 2-week notice of all upcoming events. Employers will work around your schedule (as required by law of a high school graded class). Work related absences are UNEXCUSED.
Grading
The following criteria will be used as students are earning their grades. It is important that all students understand the criteria and are able to clearly see how they have earned their grade. Point values are determined based on the amount of performances/rehearsals per grading period.
Students receive 10 points every day for a total of 50 points every week for having all materials in class and participation. Points are deducted from the student for the following reasons. Concerts are worth 100 points.
-Not having all supplies for class:
All music on stand (warm-up packet, marching/concert band repertoire, etc.)
Pencil
Reeds or valve oil for instrument
Instrument
-Not in assigned seat or at assigned instrument at the start of class.
-Not ready to play and performing in class.
-Having an attitude or being disrespectful.
-Dismissal from class for disruption is cause for loss of all points for the day.
Expectations
-Be in the right place at the right time with the right materials and the right attitude.
-Don't do anything to interfere with the ability of yourself or others to learn.
-Don't do anything to interfere with the director's ability to teach.
-Be excellent to and for each other.
-The music office is off limits to students unless the director is present, or the director has given the student permission.
-NO Food, drink, gum, candy, etc. are to be eaten in the band room, during rehearsals, on the bus or in the stands at a football game.
-A pencil is REQUIRED at all rehearsals in order to mark music and learn drill.
-All music and instruments are to be kept in their assigned area. All trash should be disposed of in the appropriate containers.
-Band members should read all event calendars and keep family (and employers) informed of all upcoming activities.
-Band members are expected to pay all debts by the appointed deadlines.
-The use of profane and/or violent language or gestures will not be tolerated.
-No public displays of affection (PDA).
-Cell phones are not to be with you or in use during rehearsal.
-Personal backpacks or bags will not be permitted in the stands at football games.
-No perfume or spray of any kind is permitted in the band room.
- NO talking or moving is permitted while the band is at Attention.
-Have respect for the students band officers, and take their suggestions constructively. If at any time, you feel that you have been unjustly treated, you are to report this to the directors or staff.
-While in the stands for games, the entire band will play as an ensemble.
-Especially while in uniform, you are “performing” the entire time. You should act in a respective manner that leaves a positive and lasting impression representing Chippewa High School.
-Band members will stay seated on their assigned bus to and from all performances (in assigned seats, when necessary). All members must ride the bus to and from all band functions. Should a student need to leave early from a performance, the director must be notified in advance in the form of an Absence Form and a written letter from the student’s parent or guardian. The student will only be permitted to leave with his or her own parent or guardian, after the band director has seen the student with his or her parent or guardian.
--When with the marching band and at all marching band events, all rules found in the Chippewa High School student handbook will be strictly enforced.
-Chaperones, bus drivers, and band staff have the authority to enforce all regulations as set forth by Chippewa High School and this handbook.
Penalties and Rule Infractions
It is hoped that you are a member of this organization because you want to be a part of the best possible band program that is offered. Discipline problems slow down the band’s progress and do not represent Chippewa High School in the best possible manner. In addition to all rules and regulations, the following items are examples of unacceptable conduct:
-Showing disrespect to teachers, student leaders, students, parents, and staff.
-Interfering with your own or other students' abilities to learn or the director's ability to teach.
-Untidiness in uniform.
-Gum chewing in rehearsal or at a performance.
-Leaving the stands at a game without permission.
-Failing to memorize music and drill.
-Improper care of school or personally owned instruments.
*Consequences for rule infractions can range from removal from class, loss of 3rd quarter privileges (or any other privileges, * such as band trips) to referral to an administrator for school disciplinary action.
Marching Band Uniforms
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL UNIFORM PIECES THAT ARE ISSUED TO YOU; HOWEVER, THE UNIFORMS ARE PROPERTY OF THE CHIPPEWA HIGH SCHOOL BAND.
At the end of the school year, you may be charged for the following:
1.) Any item issued to you that is not returned.
2.) Any item that is damaged or in poor condition.
Uniform replacement parts that may be asked of you:
Pants ~ $120.00
Jacket ~ $250.00
Hat ~ $45.00
Raincoat ~ $75.00
***These are approximate prices and may go up or down depending on catalog pricing per year***
Expectations while in Uniform
It is important to remember that while you are in uniform, you are in fact “performing” the entire time.
1.) For performances, students are to be in uniform at all times unless otherwise instructed. From the moment you dress in your uniform at school to the moment you change out of your uniform upon returning, you are to be in full uniform. Jacket on and velcroed up. Unless you are directed otherwise.
2.) Only your band t-shirt and athletic shorts (long underwear, or spandex in cold weather) are to be worn underneath your uniform. In the event that we would have the opportunity to take our jackets off because of the heat, we can only do so if everyone has the same shirt on.
3.) We will make arrangements to have your uniform altered. DO NOT CUT THE UNIFORM!!! If you have any problems, please ask the director.
4.) Uniforms will be dry cleaned during the season. Do not take your uniforms home to wash them!!!!
5.) Hats are to be worn slightly forward on the head with hair pinned up underneath the hat. Hair should come no lower than your collar. Hats may be taken off when in the stands. On cold days, color appropriate hats (Blue, White, Black, and Gray) or earmuffs may be worn while in the stands. Plumes are handed out just before a performance. They are worn during shows and are collected immediately after the performance. Students never keep the plumes.
6.) Black marching band shoes are worn for marching with plain black socks that come above the ankle. New students will be required to purchase their own shoes. Midwest Bands will be available during a band rehearsal for students to order shoes. Marching shoe prices are between $30-$35. Used shoes are available upon request (Sizes vary).
7.) All band members except auxiliary and percussion are to wear the specified gloves for marching. Gloves must be kept clean! Replacement gloves are $4.00 a pair.
8.) Raincoats are worn when marching into the football stadium on cold or inclement nights. They are left in the stands while performing shows, unless otherwise instructed.
9.) NO JEWELERY is to be worn while in uniform. Be sure to remember this when considering an additional piercing.
10.) Make-up should be kept to a minimum or at the director’s discretion. Face painting of any sort will not be permitted.
11.) Prior to any band event, each band member will be inspected by the Vice President to ensure that all uniform policies are being followed. Students without the appropriate parts to their uniform will be expected to get the missing parts before the performance. Students who do not follow proper uniform directions may not be allowed to participate and will lose credit for that performance.
Band Council
Band officers will be chosen each school year in May. Students planning on running for band council must participate in the band program to the fullest extent to gain experience in order to fully lead the ensemble. They are the leaders of the band and the people who contribute the most to the ensembles. Interested students will need to submit an essay of interest before they are considered for any position. Faculty forms may be sent out as well to assess the student’s participation and leadership qualities in areas outside of band. The directors will choose the students through interviews for these positions. Students must be in Marching Band and seventh period Concert Band class all year prior to becoming an officer to be considered. Students must remain in both Marching Band and Concert Band for the duration of the term of service or their position will be revoked.
The following band council positions are available and will be elected to serve a one-year term.
Field Commander
The Field Commander of the Chippewa Marching Band is looked to first as the leader of the band. His/Her responsibility is to act as a liaison between the director and the band. The Field Commander must be in attendance for all practices and performances through out the season, beginning with band camp. If for any reason, he/she does not agree with the director’s decisions, he/she is to keep it in perspective as it can affect the morale, discipline and respect of the band. As a leader, it is important that he/she understands how to constructively and respectfully criticize peers and to encourage them to do their best. The Field Commander and President are separate officer positions and must be able to work together in leading the band. Although the position is more prominent during the marching season, he/she is still looked to as a leader of the band through out the school year. The Field Commander is a position that requires an audition in place of the interview process.

This includes helping the uniform moms, making sure each student has their gloves, appropriate socks, etc., for all games, competitions/shows and concerts. The vice president also works with the president to help plan Band Council meetings and assist in teaching drill to peers. If the president should not fulfill his/her duties, the vice president is responsible. This position is available to junior or senior band students only (unless the director allows).
Secretary
The secretary’s main responsibility is to take an accurate attendance count for EVERY rehearsal, performance, etc! This is to be done at the beginning of each class/rehearsal/performance and altered when needed throughout the duration of the class/rehearsal/performance. He/She must set an example by being in class, on time, ready with all the necessary materials for class to begin to take attendance. The secretary will enforce the “no gum” policy and mark on the attendance sheet if students do not comply. The secretary will keep track of whether students have all materials for class and mark the attendance accordingly. He/She will also note whether band members are ready and on time and will mark ‘Tardy’ on the attendance sheet if they are not ready for class to begin. The secretary also assists the president and vice president with their duties. This position is available to second year + band students only (unless the director allows).
Treasurer
The treasurer is responsible for keeping an accurate list of students who owe money to the band organization. He/She will collect all forms from fundraisers and will keep an accurate list of which students have turned in forms. The treasurer will help the other officers in their tasks as well. This position is available to second year + band students only (unless the director allows).

This position is available to second year + band students only (unless the director allows).
Section Leaders
Section Leaders are students who were nominated by their instrument sections and approved by the directors to lead music rehearsals and assist with learning drill and fundamentals. Officers may also hold this position depending on the nominations and talents of the students in each particular section. It is expected that Section Leaders assist with helping the Officers while teaching music, fundamentals and drill for their own particular section. Sections include but may change from year to year depending on instrumentation;
x Flute/Clarinet
x Trumpet
x Mellophone/Saxophone
x Low Brass
x Percussion
Colorguard Captain

She is expected to help out her fellow peers whenever she is able to with routines, drill, etc. She is also expected to help with fundraising, loading and unloading flags, hair, make up, and uniform inspections. The Colorguard Captain is to hold her peers to a high standard so that everyone can succeed to the best of their abilities.
***It is expected that all band officers follow all the rules given in this handbook as well as any other rules set by Ms. Riendeau and the other directors. Student band officers are to lead by example and share their enthusiasm for the band program and presentation.
Hierarchy of Leadership
It is important as a member of the band to know where you stand, as well as the potential for leadership you have as you continue through your years in Chippewa’s Band program. Below is the hierarchy of leadership, should you have trouble with music or any other questions or concerns, here is the chain of command for you to find answers.

Although, you may not have a role of leadership in the ensemble, your attitude and behavior directly affect the morale and all around success of the band. You are an essential part of the band no matter what your title and you should behave with respect to your self and others.
*If at any time you feel that an officer, section leader or upper classman is taking advantage of their leadership, you are to immediately speak with Ms. Riendeau or any of the other directors and they will address the situation.
Summer Marching Band Camp
Summer Marching Band Camp begins in late July with morning rehearsals to prepare for the traditional Rogues Hollow Parade in early August and the competition halftime show. Since band camp takes place in July and August, usually the hottest months in Ohio, and the type of activities we will do, there are some tips to keep in mind with preparing for band each day.
1.) Bring a water bottle with plenty of ice to last through the day. Water is provided, but students may find it more convenient to have their own.
2.) Wear comfortable tennis shoes. Shoes are to be worn at ALL times!!! NO SANDALS!!! Not wearing appropriate shoes can actually be dangerous when students are marching because it is easy to trip and sprain ankles.
3.) Wear light colors or dress appropriately in light clothing. The days will be hot and students should not wear heavy or dark colored fabrics.
4.) Wear sunscreen. We will be practicing on our marching field, which has no shade, and the direct sunlight can be damaging to your skin.
5.) Students may wish to bring a change of clothes if they desire or anything to freshen up with. (No perfume/glitter/body sprays in the band room!!!)
6.) Students may wish to bring snacks (you may only eat snacks outside of the band room before or after rehearsal unless otherwise permitted).
7.) Do not forget to bring instruments, music, pencils, drill charts, folders, etc., to all band rehearsals.
8.) We will march regardless of rain. Students can use the band raincoats, but are allowed to wear their own during practice.
10.) Senior students will lead stretches each day. All band students must participate. Marching will be painful and detrimental to your muscles if you do not participate in this warm-up.
11.) Wear sunglasses. The sun can be harmful to your eyes.
***If you have any questions or concerns, talk to the upper class students in the band. They have participated in the band for many years and can give you tips and helpful hints on how to make summer marching band camp a great experience!!!
